Whether you are picking up a racquet for the first time or preparing for competitive play, a few fundamentals make a big difference. Here are five tips Coach Simona Tomczak, a USPTA Certified Tennis Professional and Head Women’s Tennis Coach at Moraine Valley Community College, shares with players at Sports Wonderful.
1. Get your feet moving first
Most missed shots start with the feet, not the arm. Use a small split step as your opponent hits the ball, then take quick adjustment steps so you arrive balanced and ready to swing.
2. Prepare your racquet early
Turn your shoulders and start your backswing as soon as you know which side the ball is coming to. Early preparation gives you time and makes your stroke smoother and more consistent.
3. Aim for consistency before power
Winning points usually comes from getting one more ball back in the court. Practice rallying with good depth and margin over the net before trying to hit harder.
4. Make your serve a routine
A repeatable pre-serve routine, such as a set number of bounces and a deep breath, helps you stay calm under pressure. Focus on a consistent toss; it is the foundation of a reliable serve.
5. Build strength off the court
Strong legs, core and shoulders help you move faster, hit with more control and stay injury-resistant. Many of our players pair their tennis lessons with 20-minute EMS sessions for efficient strength training.
Private or group lessons
We offer private tennis lessons for focused, personal improvement and group sessions for players who enjoy training with others. Every lesson is tailored to your level and goals.
